Big changes have come to the international electronics industry. In the past, scant attention was paid to the deleterious effects of materials used in the manufacture of popular consumer products. As these products appeared in land fills it was observed that some of the chemicals used in their production made their way to our drinking water supplies and poisoned the environment. The danger posed by the disposal of electronics in this way led the European Union to enact the RoHS Directive.
The RoHS Directive stands for "the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment". This Directive bans the placing on the EU market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants.
Businesses in the United States are not required to adhere to the rules mandated by the RoHS Directive at this time unless they ship products to EU member states. Direct Connections has decided to begin offering USB flash drives that are RoHS compliant. We have included several of these drives to our 2008 catalog. We will add to our selection of RoHS compliant electronics and eco-friendly packaging throughout 2008 and beyond.
